Symptoms That Show that You Should Get a Pap Smear Done

Some Common Tests Other than Pap Smear
- While the Pap smear is the most common test for detecting cervical cancer, there are a few other tests that can provide additional information:
- HPV Testing: Human papillomavirus is the primary cause of cervical cancer. So HPV testing is often done along with Pap smear. Getting an HPV Vaccination done is also a wise choice.
- Liquid-Based Cytology (LBC): This method is similar to a Pap smear but in this a liquid medium is used to preserve the cervical cells that have been taken out for testing. This provides more accurate and clearer test results.
- Colposcopy: If a Pap smear shows abnormal results, a colposcopy may be performed. In this test a magnifying instrument is used to closely examine the cervix for any abnormalities.
- Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA): If many tests are not available then VIA may be used as an alternative. In this test, the cervix area is coated with acetic acid (vinegar), and any abnormal areas turn white.
- Although these alternatives are helpful, the Pap smear is still the gold standard for routine cervical cancer screening.

Women aged between 21 to 29 should have a Pap smear every three years. Women betwween ages 30 to 65 years can get a Pap smear every 3 years or Co testing (Pap smear+HPV test) every 5 years (this is preferred) .The frequency of tests changes as per the family history and overall risk factor of the patient.
The procedure is not painful but it can cause minimal discomfort. The patient may feel mild pressure or cramping during the test.
A Pap smear test can detect the presence of HPV which is a type of sexually transmitted disease but for other kind of STDs, more tests are required.
Please don’t panic, as abnormal results do not always mean cancer. They may indicate minor changes in the cervical cells that require further tests or treatment.
